This seminar explores the role and contemporary challenges of criminal justice social work practice and research internationally. It draws on the forthcoming Routledge International Handbook of Criminal Justice Social Work, one of the first major collaborative achievements of the ESWRA Social Work, Crime and Criminal Justice (SWCCJ) Special Interest Group (SIG) since its establishment in 2022.

The handbook features contributions from many SIG members as well as authors from diverse backgrounds around the world. Together, they offer a global overview of how criminal justice social work is understood, practiced, and researched.

This online seminar aims to:

• Provide ESWRA members with insight into this global perspective
• Update on the work of the SWCCJ SIG
• Open dialogue for debate and international collaboration in future research

Presenters’ bios:

Donna Peacock
Donna Peacock is Head of the Department of Criminology and Sociology at Birmingham City University, UK. Her research focuses on vulnerability in police custody and the intersections between disability studies and criminology.

Jeanne Hersant
Jeanne Hersant is an Assistant Professor in the Social Work School at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Her research explores access to justice and judicial reforms in Latin America.

Rose Parkes
Rose Parkes is Associate Dean (Academic Programmes) at the Institute of Law, Jersey, and a part-time PhD researcher and Associate Lecturer at The Open University, UK. Her work examines criminal justice, marginalisation, and education in prisons.

Donna-Maree Humphery
Donna-Maree Humphery is a Lecturer in Social Work at the University of Salford, UK. Her research interests include gender, criminal justice, social work, and trauma-informed practices.

Tracey A. Bone
Tracey A. Bone, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Manitoba, Canada. Her research focuses on Deaf studies, mental health, and forensic social work.

Caroline J. Bald
Caroline Bald is a Lecturer in Social Work at The Open University, UK. Her research focuses on inclusive social work education, curriculum development, and equitable admissions practices.

Inés Martínez-Herrero
Inés Martínez-Herrero is a Lecturer in Social Work at the National University of Distance Education (UNED), Spain. Her research explores human rights, social justice, and the histories of social work.
